Are You on the Gov 2.0 Train Yet?

By now you are probably sick of hearing about Web 2.0 in your workplace—“we have to get a blog,” “we need to be on Facebook.”  The new administration is echoing this pressure and encouraging  government entities to get on board.  The spur of Web 2.0 activity among government has generated the term “Gov 2.0” to categorize the next generation of a more collaborative, transparent, and web savvy government.

Does your agency really understand the value of Gov 2.0 as it relates to your mission?  At ENC, we are the government marketing experts and, by practice, take successful communications tactics from industry and apply them for government, ultimately promoting better communication throughout, into and out-of government.  There are both simple and sophisticated online tools that enable effective communications through the web.  They key for your organization is knowing what’s available, what’s been done, and what are the right tools to meet your objectives.

There are several federal agencies and organizations out in front, testing various online tools that we can learn from.  The National Academy of Public Administration (NAPA) has a series of case studies documenting the government’s use of a wide variety of collaborative online tools.  You can also turn to the local Bethesda chapter of the Armed Forces Communications and Electronics association (AFCEA) for good Gov 2.0 examples.  The Young AFCEA group is hosting a Federal Web 2.0 Virtual Podium series featuring real government executives telling their stories of successful implementations of Web 2.0 strategies and tactics within government.

The administration’s impact combined with the public’s desire for participation will require new tools, new communications, new thinking.  Are you on the Gov 2.0 train yet?
